I first saw the Manhattan skyline as we drove in and I looked out of my window to the right I saw lady Liberty herself. My driver playing 80’s disco funk, with a cracked wing mirror, as we started driving there was immediate road rage as he got out the car to argue with another driver I noticed his cracked wing mirror. I had made it to NEW YORK CITY!
New York is diverse, a melting pot of cultures and liberation, it is the American Dream.

Walking around the bustling streets of Times Square I found myself embedded in the culture which has influenced so many of my childhood memories through movies and music. The famous Radio City music Hall where my favorite Artists have played, to the armed forces recruitment Centre, NYPD cop cars and yellow cabs. The only place I’ve ever seen Fat Joe on a billboard. It felt surreal to finally be here.
This truly is the city that never sleeps.
Rockefeller Center
I took a tour to learn more about the statues the significance was intense. This statue of Atlas was especially interesting, his shoulders point towards the North Star. There was dispute over it looking at the church as a figure of the devil, the counterargument was that it was protecting the church. Quite a few multiple meanings and Symbol.
Swing 46 Jazz and Supper Club
Located in Hells Kitchen, theatre district this venue has been open for over seventeen years, keeping swing dance alive. Focused on music from the “Swing Era” from the 1940’s to the mid 1950’s, it has a modern American menu to match. You can take dance lessons or just enjoy the ambiance. It was something a little different for me but I enjoyed the experience of being transported back in time.
United Nations Headquarters
I had to pay a visit to the United Nations Headquarters. The UN is defined as ‘an intergovernmental organization that was tasked to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international co-operation and be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations’. I loved how multicultural it was and thought the tour was a little rushed there was a lot of information. We had a quick tour of the conference rooms and in one particular room I was asked, ‘why do you think the roof is unfinished?’ I answered, ‘because there is still work to be done’ I was right. Really enjoyed the selection of books and items in the stores below.
My favorite pieces of art in the UN Building was the ‘Golden Rule,’ by Norman Rockwell:
‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’
Manhattan Skyline is incredible and I wanted to get up high so I could appreciate it in its fullest so I headed for the Rockefeller Center at night. What song did I need to listen to up here?? C-N-N – T.O.N.Y (Top Of New York).
Sweet Chick
I wanted to try some vegetarian chicken and waffles at the American comfort food chain co-owned by Nasir Jones. Unfortunately, on the day I visited they had their gas turned off so there were no waffles for me! I settled for the ‘pop up taco’ instead. some very unusual cooking concepts and combinations to what I’m used to, it just means I’ll have to go back.
