Volendam: Fishing Village

A day trip you can do from Amsterdam is – Volendam. It is a scenic Dutch fishing village by Markermeer lake to the Northeast of Amsterdam. It is well known for it’s harbour with old fishing boats and colourful traditional houses and is famous for its fresh seafood.

I visited in February but the weather was mild, the bonus of going off season was it was much quieter with less tourists. It was nice to just have a walk down the pier and appreciate the local housing and building work.

Dutch Waffles & Crepes are highly recommended to try if you have a sweet tooth, you can choose from a wide range of toppings, fruits and fresh cream.

You can try the popular Dutch snack of ‘Malse Haring’ in English – raw Herring. It’s raw herring soaked in a mild preserving liquid to give it a slightly pickled taste.

The Volendam museum contains a famous mosaic created from millions of cigar bands, unfortunately I did not have to see this but it is well recommended if you visit! the museum also holds sculptures, paintings, traditional clothing and pottery from 1800.
