Amsterdam: Modern, Contemporary and Street Art Museum Amsterdam (MOCO)

Now THIS is my type of art – activism art: Banksy, Andy Warhol, Basquiat, Keith Haring and JR ! My favorite museum in Amsterdam and it’s constantly changing.

The museum is quite small so you do need to pre-order a timed ticket – just a slot for when you go in, you can stay for as long as you want. They advise you to start from the top and work your way down, there is a free audio app you can download to guide you as well.

As usual Banksy’s work is thought provoking and challenging our thoughts about society and its expectations. I particularly love how he portrays the police force in ways we may not traditionally see them.

Here are some of the Banksy pieces on display:

One of my favourite pieces by Banksy was this watchtower made of olive tree wood. I know where that came from #freepalestine I also asked them to correct their narration on the ‘flower thrower’ piece which stated Bethlehem was in Jerusalem to Palestine and they said they would !! ‘There is always hope’ was written over one of the doorways into the exhibition.

Yayoi Kusama – created a very trippy room of strips and dots.

Guns in America

There was also a selection of work by French street artist and photographer JR who is well known for flyposting large black and white portraits.

I loved his peice, Guns in America which pays tribute to his Emmy Award Nominated project with TIME Magazine –Guns in America. One by one, JR photographed, filmed, and interviewed 245 participants from diverse backgrounds. Hunters, veterans, activists, survivors, police officers, teachers, parents, and children. One by one, he pinned each cutout to compose a masterpiece. It’s a conversation starter, its powerful.

Giants

Giants was another piece by JR – Depicting a giant toddler. JR believes in the power of art, which he uses to present new perspectives, connect people, and engage audiences. He builds awareness in the world. From the favelas in Brazil to the Israel-Palestine Separation Wall, the US-Mexico Border Wall to the largest museum in the World – the artist JR begs the question, “Can Art Change the World?” Moco thinks it can.

Keith Haring – Subway Drawings

Keith created hundreds of drawings in the New York subway system in the early 80’s. His sporadic use of repetition allowed him to create multiple recognisable figures for the audience of the commuter. I loved watching the short video of the NYC subway.

Other art by KAWS, Basquiat, Banksy, Adam Parker Smith and others:
